ChiangMai RoadTrip 2004

A nice family pic. This was a rest stop on the highlands of Petchabun. The Sun was setting and I really enjoyed the sunset view. We stopped for the night at a nice resort called Rainforest. Next morning, this huge spidey greeted me when I opened my door. This was the view from our room. We went to a nearby riverbank restaurant for breakfast. On the 3rd day, we were already in Chiangrai. We were cold. so we hunted for hot porridge and noodles for breakfast. We then visited the infamous Golden Triangle. This was my 1st glance of the mighty Mekong river. We took a long boat to the Laos border. Some shots of us getting ready for the trip. I didn't like the boat trip initially. But was happy when we reached the shore. Welcome to Laos. The people in the village looked poor. Saw a baby bear which they kept as a pet. Soon, it was time to go. We had yummy prawn fritters for lunch when we reached the Thai shores again. Our next stop was Mae Sai, the northern most tip of Thailand. It was crowded and because it was getting late. mummy and daddy decided we were not going into the Burmese border. What a damper! Daddy with the Burmese border behind him. The day ended on an exciting note. We visited the Hilltribe village and I saw the long necked Karen women...wow, I was impressed. A pic with another tribe, the Akha tribe. On the 4th day in Chiangrai, we went to a famous place called Doi Tung, which locals called Thailand's Switzerland. Met some interesting village kids on the way up. I loved his hat. Mae Fah Luang. What a place.....it was the most beautiful garden I had ever seen. Daddy and mommy liked it too. We took so many shots here. Me running thru the water fountain. I love my mommy and daddy. This is me sulking. But, as usual, daddy makes me laugh again! We had lunch at Mae Salong, a hilltribe settlement occupied by former Kuomintang refugees from China. You can see those black and white Communist pics behind us. The view around Mae Salong was breathtaking. Roads were winding though, but the sights were worth it! Day 5. We departed Chiangrai for Chiangmai. Made some interesting stops along the way, including this small hot springs where we bought some quail eggs and boiled the in the hot spring for 5 mins. Mommy bought me a hilltribe costume. Watch this space during the Chinese New Year 05 reunion! We stopped at this small river next. We crossed a rickety bridge. And I took a nice pic with mommy. Mommy was 5 and a half mths pregnant with Lu Wei when this pic was taken. Our first meal in Chiangrai was McDs.Yeah!!! Notice Ronald doing the "wai"? We then walked around the Chiangmai night bazaar to work off the fat. And ended the day with dinner at the night market. We were approached by some Akha hilltribe ladies who were very nice. Mommy bought 2 bangles from them, one for each of us girls. We spent day 6 exploring the Handicraft route. Chaingmai is famous for its umbrellas, silk, ceramics, teak furniture...aahh, so much to do but so little time. Silkworms After an exhausting day of shopping, Day 7 was dedicated once again to the natural beauty of Chiangmai. We wanted to see a waterfall in the mountains and stopped by this very cool place along the way for iced tea shakes! The waterfall was great! We then visited a local village. Saw pigs and dogs living under the homes of the villagers. Boy...was I tired after all that walking. Our next stop was a geyser. The water was really hot. But I was not scared at all! We left Chaingmai on day 8. Today was another exciting day. I will be visiting the Thai Elephant conservation Centre in Lampang. Here I am with all the elephant food. Waving my sugar cane at the elephants. They don't seem keen. perhaps something else to attract them? Ah hah! So, they prefer bananas! Next on the agenda, an elephant ride. Woopee! When will this stop? All this swaying is making me bored. Did u know that even dung can be recycled? Last day of the road trip. We visited the ancient city of Sukhotai. It's 700 years old and is declared a World Heritage site by Unesco. The site was very tranquil. Here I am, leaving my mark on a 700 year old stone! And so, the adventure came to an end. When will the next one be? Watch this space! Posted by Hello
